About the
band
The Red Star Express has its roots
firmly entrenched in Eastern Wisconsin farming country.
Beginning in 1993, members of the earliest roots of the band
began to take shape, as a few musicians began an informal weekly
jam session in Gerry Jost's barn in rural Newton. Today, with
as many as eight members, the band has taken its circle of music
on the road performing for local historical events, picnics,
parties, barn dances, cultural fairs and stage concerts.
Musical arrangements feature harmony singing
along with standard bluegrass instruments----guitar, mandolin,
banjo, fiddle, upright bass, dobro and blues harp. don't be surprised
by the presence of an occasional washboard accompanist, or a
few rhythm rifts from the stump fiddle.
For the members of the Red Star Express
music is a means of escaping the stress of everyday life, while
sharing the joy of music. We hope you will feel that same enjoyment
when hear us perform.
The band's show has evolved into
somewhat of a variety show, similar to the style of the Grand
Ol' Opry. The band has structured its sets to
bring a variety of singers, players and styles to center stage.
The result has been a more entertaining show and performance.
Come out and see.....we hope you agree.
Where does the name come from?
Good question. Many of the band members have asked the same thing.
Legend has it that the barnside rec room which serves as our
practice arena holds a model truck from the old trucking line
known as the Red Star Express. Since the band expended its creativity
in other directions, they thought changing their name from the
Shameless Ucker Point Creek Band was a good idea. Somehow, and
we aren't quite sure whom to blame, but someone got the notion
of naming the band after the model truck.
We have been called many names -- including
Red Ball Express, the Red Star Jets and a few we can't mention
here. Why it stuck, we'll never know. You can call us by our
given name. Just don't call us late for the cocktail
hour.
So, roll on, buddy!
